Work of Art

A work of art can evoke many emotions, as the colour, the brushwork, the placement leave their mark on a page.

For this task, designers create an outfit that references an artistic style and limit their look to two colours with a white base, and hair of the model must match the mix of the two chosen colours.

This outfit feels a little 'Peter Pan' to me. Perhaps it is your colour choice alongside the petals flowing out at the waist and thongs. I do like the recurring texture in your dark blue pieces, but the depth of their shade leaves them really dominant in the design. I am a bit confused as to how you arrived at this colour 'mix' for the hair - generally when mixing colours you are going to get a darker shade, and to get anywhere even remotely close to this shade you would need to mix an overwhelming amount of white in to lighten the mix which in my mind is not really following the directions in the task.

Jared, I love the silhouette and its shape. It's flattering to the eyes. The blue design from the head to the chest is what got me in the bottom in some other long-term which I completely disagreed about because it was unique and it works here as well. That design is unique and different so I appreciate that. You have style. However, there are a few adjustments that can be made in order to elevate this look. Instead of cyan, the right color was teal since we're dealing with a mixture of blue and green. Sandals are a no on the runway. I would've loved to see shoes instead. If your pose was a walk, the dress would've flowed with movement which would've improved this look even further. Also, I wish the strap on the chest-belt was that shade of blue as well instead of white to make the headpiece connect to that part but other than that, great work this week.

This small highlights of the colour work really well across this outfit. Your dominant colour, though less used throughout the outfit, still stands out without  being overbearing, and I think you've achieved a really nice (delicate) balance between your colours and the white, well done. The flowyness also helps towards showcasing your romanticism influences, and I think this hair perfectly ties in this art style with the look.

Ashlyn, I love the mixing color choices. I just wish that you incorporated more blue to balance out the green. I love those pants, they're my absolute favorite because I like the details on it. I like the mixture of green and blue in the mid section and the pose is right. Having the green lining under those shoes was smart. However, I don't understand the backpack with that jacket. It sort of looks like a hunchback. Although I see where you were going, I wish the backpack wasn't there. All in all, the look is great, but it can be better.

I appreciate that you took a simple colour choice for this task with the primary colours of yellow and red to make orange. Sometimes simple is better. With cubism, you are trying to create something which appears flat and not multidimensional, and I think you have done a really good job of this with your top half of the outfit. I'm not sure the bottom half nails that as effectively, however the pant and shoe combo lend themselves well to the overall design. I really enjoy this look overall, but I can't quite put into words why, it just makes me want to keep coming back to look. Nice work.

Joel, I love the color combination to make orange. I love the red details with the yellow. However, I'm confused a bit with the orange on the belt. It should've been red but if it couldn't be used with that belt, another belt would've helped although I appreciate your path while making this outfit. From the waist up I love the outfit, but from the waist down there could have been some adjustments. I am a sucker for flattering shapes and silhouettes. I just wish the shape from the waist down was more elevated. The pants are skinny but the shoes are bigger. As a whole, the look is great and I'm glad you're still learning, I just wish it was an amazing outfit like last week. If you keep up the pace from last week's submission, you may win this competition. Bring that Joel back, I see potential.

I am not at all surprised you chose abstract art to inspire you - that is of course your signature style. I appreciate the asymmetry of this piece, with the blue draped section on the left and the half collar on the right. Your walking pose is also gorgeous. The outfit itself looks quite youthful with the uncinched shirt flowing out to a rigid circle skirt - it does however make me think of something that could be crossing into a more costumey look with the shape of that dress because I imagine the skirt is kept out like that with a rigid hula hoop almost, so watch how far you are pushing the designs.

As a look, I quite enjoy this design, however I feel like your hair colour had some creative licensing happening and doesn't match the brief. I feel like you took some creative licencing to get that bold hot pink when in reality your colour should have been more of a  burgundy (and yes, I tried increasing the parts of each colour to get a closer match, but was unable to get anywhere close). In terms of art style, I think your accessories and paint distribution worked well for that abstract theme, and you have a recurring swoosh pattern going on inside the design which I really like. Overall, a beautiful outfit but you need to pay closer attention to task details.

Rachel, I dig this look. The magenta hair was a nice touch especially the flowy-ness to the white, red, and purple. You understood the assignment. Normally headpieces aren't needed with most looks but it works here because it's not over the top. The silhouette is appealing. I love the walk pose from the side because it makes that solid dress a bit flowy. The red line drips and the purple lining on the bottom of the dress are cool to look at. The only two things I would've appreciated even more is if you had a nude color lip instead of the red and have no earrings. Other than that, really cool presentation.

In terms of artistic inspiration, I think you've nailed this look. Bauhaus is about geometric balance and emphasis on function and this look has those balanced patterns and comes across as really wearable. Your colour choice, though simple is really effective and lends itself to a punky vibe which is in line with the other designs you have created. The hair also follows this aesthetic with the short purple bangs. I love that you found a way to stay true to yourself as a designer despite the limitations placed on you for the task. Well done.

Anne,  you've chosen the same color mixing as me. You have a good sense of fashion. I love this overall shape. The hair is right in terms of design and color. The detailing of the blue and red paint drips around the the coat and underneath is stunning to look at although I wish that coat allowed white instead of light grey because I know it doesn't so I see where you were going with the blue around it. You have great attention to detail. This whole outfit looks like graffiti and I'm a sucker for graffiti artwork. The blue pants inside the white boots is what I call fashion. This entire look is perfection. Each week you blow me away more and more.. keep up the good work and focus.

I love how you have incorporated movement into this outfit, yet still have it looking stiff and structured, in a way that represents your cubism inspiration. The hair tie is a nice addition as it breaks up your colour. I do wonder if the skirt twas the best choice for this design It is a lot less 'blocky' than the rest of the outfit, and you haven't utilised it's two tone functionality, so perhaps a different piece at the base would have suited the look better.

I don't necessarily agree with Peeta's criticism on the head direction, however a different hair style may have helped make it look more natural to be in this pose. Great work.

Chan, I like the outfit, I don't love it. I don't understand that pose. You're walking to the right but your head is facing the opposite direction which I don't think is possible in life. The pose distracts me from your outfit.. because it takes away from the look. The textures and details of the outfit are nice. I just wish the scarf was not facing the same way you're looking. I will say my favorite part of this look is that the green and pink look like it's dripping down. The hair is ok although I would've preferred if you chose a different one to elevate the look as a whole. Your placements in this competition are up and down like a rollercoaster. Bring that Chan back from the blacklight week.

TASK EIGHT VERDICT

While there are some brilliant designs submitted this week, it is kind of disappointing to see so many last minute submissions at this stage in the competition. We should not be having to chase you to make sure you realise the deadline is about to hit when we haven't even seen a draft from you. Next weeks task requires forward planning if you want to see mockups as there is a lockout period applied for feedback which comes into effect PRIOR to the deadline. The competition is very tight, so take the time to really think about your approaches next week. - Peeta & Elysse

Winner

Congratulations Harry. You have shown us a true abstract masterpiece. Your outfit nailed the task and showed real innovation.

Elimination

It is time to say goodbye to Joelings. Unfortunately, being late has cost you the competition. Your penalty of -1 has made the difference between staying in and going home. You are such a talented designer so it is sad to see you go, especially after your bold outfit from last week, but this late in the competition, every point counts.

While we are sad to see you go so soon, we hope that you continue to work on your outfits and grow, even through this competition.

While you are no longer eligible for the grand prize, you can continue to submit outfits based on the theme after elimination to compete for the Most Improved Designer prize of 100c.

We hope to see you in future short term games inside Habbo, and would happily welcome you back to a future season of Fresh Faces.
