Customised fabric prints

Fashion design isn't just about the technical skills it takes to sew/put a look together. Colour and print play a strong role in the overall outfit as well. A custom designed fabric print can showcase your skills with colours and pattern.

For this task, designers were tasked with creating a custom fabric print to incorporate into their looks.

Elysse

There is something simple, yet chic about this outfit. It looks like you are ready to go to a party. I think your side angle has done a really good job of showing off the fabric, while still keeping in some of the detail from additional clothing items as they peep through underneath. I could see this look at a party because of the bright colours you have chosen for your print. This bright and fun style is paired perfectly with your shoes, however the clips seem to miss the mark for me.

Jared, I love this print you designed. It's very unique and sort of looks like a caricature. What I find fascinating about this outfit is that when you look closer at it, you can clearly see the black latex which is on the print. That is huge attention to detail. Not only do the colors match, but the silhouette itself is striking. I expected everyone to show the print throughout majority of their outfit and I appreciate that you chose a different route. Also, I love the hair choice because we don't see that often. My favorite part about this presentation is that even the shoes and headpiece has the print. Keep up the good work.

There is something gorgeous about this simplistic route you took to hero the print you created in your design. I wear a lot of printed fabric in my day to day life, and these sorts of designs tell a bold visual story to those looking on, rather than clouding the outfit with a more subtle repeat print pattern. Your outfit has created a striking visual cohesiveness to your story, with the choice to mirror the key colours in the print through the rest of your design.

When I was editing this look, I will admit, I wasn't sure how it would turn out given the lack of additional shadows/dimension in your choice of items, but what I've been left with is understated beauty. Nice work.

Ashlyn, this is one of my favorite outfits of the week. It was a smart idea to incorporate a print that resembles a vacation especially when a lot of people need one or several with the hard work they do. I love the makeup on your face. It adds a kick to the outfit. I also love the overall shape of the outfit and the bottom half gives a nice water feel to it. I love the dark lining on the wings.. haven't seen that before. My two favorite things about this look, the back pose along with the head turned to the side. This is pure art. I am happy that this was the direction you took. One word: Perfection. Keep it up.

This design is actually so captivating. I think this is one of the designs that I was most surprised at this week - not because you aren't capable of great outfits, but because the choice of custom fabric and the clothing you chose to place it on created this perfectly harmonious mixture to me.

I am personally often inspired by natural elements, so drawing on the sea had me really excited!

The sheer black dress skirt with the seascape print is just mesmerising, and with the stars on the top, it could be seen as the night sky as well. The dark colours really helped keep this sheer illusion working seamlessly in my opinion, while still showcasing the black shoes underneath the dress.

I like that you chose to add the veil. For me it is like you have tried to take the essence of the print and translate it into a practical accessory for your design, and the unedited crown topping it off also emulates the highlights of the ocean waves in your print.

I will say, I don't think you needed the bag. The vest works - although perhaps it could have been better served in a grey rather than a purple - however the bag just seems like an added accessory for the sake of an accessory.

Joel, I love the mystic feel of this look. It looks like the galaxy with all of the stars. I will be honest, the print itself creeped me out because it looks like dark water in the ocean. But, the way it looks presented to me makes me overlook the print. It's just amazing. The texture of the tiara part of the headpiece gives it a sequin touch just like the outfit so kudos for matching the two. The only thing I don't get about this overall look is the vest. I feel like it belongs on another outfit OR if it was black to go with the whole outfit it would've been upgraded. The purse wasn't needed but I do love the design on it. A job well done this week.

When you submitted this, you said you wanted to hero an animal to reflect your enthusiasm for them, however wanted to ensure that it would be commercial enough that others would want to wear it too (ruling out showcasing your love for bulldogs). I think you have achieved something that is definitely capturing the tiger in this outfit, helped especially with the tattoo print available in game. Using an animal which you could clearly define with in game items was actually quite a smart move because it ensured that regardless of how your fabric was placed on the design, the tiger would still be clearly communicated in the design.

I love the contrast of the purple amongst the black and white, and I'm glad you didn't go for a more stereotypical animal print which showcases greenery and jungle instead. The asymmetrical sleeves also help accentuate the outfit nicely.

I'm not sure I'm in love with how your head piece turned out in the end. Perhaps the covering of the eye was too much, or the head covering needed to be a different colour. Something was off here for me.

Nicole, I love that you show us a look like this mainly because it's giving me Sub Zero vibes from Mortal Kombat and Sub Zero is my favorite character. The good thing about this overall garment is that it doesn't look too costumey. The print you've designed is amazing. It's actually my favorite print of the week. Much like Jared, you did not use the whole print around majority of your look and I can appreciate that. You put enough for the outfit to stand out. The eye-patch with that design is marvelous. Normally I would say to remove the headpiece because it wasn't needed, but it works with this outfit. The only thing I would remove are the earpieces. It was not needed although I love the approach you took. Nice work.

For those of you reading the critiques and wondering what I mean by hand cut and folded fabric, let me show you a close up of what Harry submitted:

Elysse

You took a super innovative approach to the look this week. Not only did you design a custom print, but you also thought about how you could work it as a piece of fabric/material. When you submitted this, you informed me that you had taken your fabric and torn it up, painstakingly cutting and folding pieces to create this textured pattern. Let me tell you - I did not expect to get anyone thinking about something like this at all.

Your look, though simple, is quite complex. Your original print aimed to communicate geo minimalist luxury, and even with cutting up the design, you still see that come across a bit, if not with a bit more of a punk twist. The styling/accessories you chose to suit a beachside bar works well and I could see this working well in Miami. The subtle hints of green in the jewellery, the sunnies, and the punk hair all seem to just communicate to the whole look perfectly. I also love the amount of open space on the back. It allows the look to BREATHE and makes the darker hair work really well. I have nothing else to say. This is gorgeous from head to toe. Well done.

Harry, I immediately loved the design as I've seen it before with the first draft.. but you elevated it this week and I'm proud of you. You took a different approach with the print. Instead of meshing the print around as shown on display, you have managed to use the background color in one side and the lines on the other. That was very clever of you. I love the accessories and the back look. The tail splitting the outfit in half was brilliant. I don't know what that's supposed to be in the lower back, maybe venus dimples but I'm digging it. Love this look! You should be proud of this as I am.

While I love your print, it definitely was one that came with more of a risk - if left unchecked, this fabric could come across as a halloween costume - I should know, I own a few dresses like this in real life. What I am impressed by is the way you chose to incorporate just enough of the fabric to ensure we could see the vision behind your design, without making it overbearing. The layers in this outfit are honestly incredible. The way the red skirt drapes honestly makes me think of duchess satin and so the choice to move away from a more traditional one colour tone dress with this material is unique in itself. Your print combined with this luxurious material elevates the look beyond costumey for me. It creates a strikingly luxurious, dominant femme dress, and I'm living for it.

Anne, the print is very gore-like. I don't know whether to love it or not, but I do see that maybe you were trying to tell a story. I love the color combinations but not the blood splatter aspect. However, I do appreciate that the print you designed was different than the other designer's prints. I love the use of the print in your outfit. Having it on the sides with the dark red in the middle was smart. It looks like a river of blood. I love the opening of the neck area because it doesn't choke you so there's room to breathe. The hair, makeup, and shoes are nice. I just wish the overall shape of the garment was more flattering. That is my only critique for your look this week. A job well done.

There is something innocent and serene about your design. I love that the butterflies add a splash of green into the outfit, and that the eyeshadow matches your custom print. What this look is lacking for me however is some brightness. There is an overwhelming amount of blue in the design, and while the green butterflies are a start, I think a bit of extra yellow throughout the outfit would have not only tied in your accessories, but also lifted your whole design. When I first looked at this look with Peeta, I had also expressed a wish for a hair style, but he talked me around - a hairstyle would have been too much with how much material you have going on in this look, and the only reason that the excessive material works without being too heavy in my opinion is because it feels light and flowy as a result of the print..

Chan, I love the colors of this print and I also love butterflies. One of my favorite outfits of this week. You chose cool temperature colors. This look gives me a mixture of earth and water elements and I dig it. I love the shape of this garment and the headpiece works here. The accessories especially the chest area was a good touch to elevate the look. I love the oversized sleeves. The closing of the eyes was nice because it shows the full eye makeup. My favorite part of this entire look is the movement at the bottom. It's so elegant, flowy, and smooth. However, the only thing I would change is the blue solid color in the outfit. It camouflages with the background. I wish you chose maybe a green or yellow color instead but that's just me being picky. Despite that, this is still a home run look.

Your original material choice had so much texture in it, from the scarf to the shirt and the belt, there was so much potential for these elements to be showcased with a lighter design, but I have to say, while I'm sad we don't get the intensity of these natural fabric elements, I'm not disappointed with the look you created either! Your starry pattern blends so well that it looks almost like sequins cascading down your dress. Where the texture remained on the sleeve also adds a really interesting design element as it gives the illusion of an elaborate collar piece. Your accessories, though simple, have been chosen well, and this is honestly one of the best uses I've seen of space bun hair. This design could work in a formal setting (and would translate especially well into plus size clothing), but I could also see it out and about at the club! Well done.

Chris, normally I would say that in the case of prints, putting glitter alone without other touches would be putting less effort. However, this look is so appealing regardless. I love the detailing placements of this print. It really catches the eye. I am a sucker for a black and gold combination especially if it lights up. I love the shape of this sleeves with that baggy feel. The shoulder ruffs with the "V" shape in the middle along with the belt really elevated this look. I say this because if it was all glitter without any detailing in the middle or shoulders, this would've been a bust. I love the hair with it, the accessories matches, and I love the leather shoes with this look. That's what this look needed, a leather shoe and you fulfilled that. I am proud of you this week.

There is something absolutely mesmerising about the way your colours dip in and out of each other. This look is definitely fashion forward which is a huge step forward from your draft look. While it has some references to 2000s fashion with the way it layers, I think this look re-invents the style well. Your custom fabric for the fringe on the skirt has also helped make that element which is typically overused in PR seem new. Your simple, pulled back braids also work well to keep the attention on your dress which is good because your pattern has enough detail on its own. Well done.

Rachel, I appreciate you chose a different color palette than the other designers. I love the different shades of pink on this print. It's giving me pink flames. It can also be interpreted as pink circles. Bottom line, I love the mix of shades. I love the print on this look. It's giving lines in all different directions.. vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. My favorite parts are the cuts connecting at the bottom and the middle. The middle looks like a tube with lines.. it's pretty unique.  Also, you did not wear shoes that cover your legs which is a good thing because that would distract the look. My only critiques are that I would've loved to see that print on the shoes and a different hairstyle. Other than that. nice work!
