Unconventional Materials
Some of the most amazing outfits can be made out of unconventional materials, transforming these things into something fashionable and new.

Designers were asked to use unconventional materials as a part of their designs, transforming the material into a high fashion garment.

I'm not quite sure where to start today. I'm struggling to see how a lot of your outfit works with your source material. If you found new inspiration, that's amazing, but without that context I'm grasping at straws.
This dress could have been brilliant for another task. The silhouette you create with the purple cutouts is really innovative, but in terms of following the brief, I think you fell short.
I will say that the stylings on your head are amazing. the curved metal head piece, with the firey red hair is absolutely on point, and I think the splash of green really helps elevate the look here. I just wish you had carried that grey tone with teal highlights as you moved on to the rest of the look.
I struggle a bit with the textures of your feathered cowl and skirt. When I think of sculpted metal, I think of iron coming out hot from the fire, smooth, unblemished, without the detail - the peeps of light blue/purple fabrics are brilliant examples of this, however those darker purple elements really miss the mark for me with this task.

Necole, there's something that catches the eye and it's the pose. I love a combination of a still pose with the head turned to the side. The use of the headpiece for your material was smart because I see the metal being sculpted. Also, the hair looks good in that angle. I love feathered cowls if done correctly and you've managed to place it in such a way I haven't seen before from the back but.. it looks like it belongs on a different outfit. That middle curve layering is nice and I wish you took that direction more. Although I love the overall shape of this garment, I wish you incorporated a different bottom. I feel as if it's overused. The only two areas I feel the metal was not being used to its fullest potential are the chest and bottom which is pretty much majority of the presentation. I hope you do better next time.

I didn’t care for this outfit at all, but luckily for you I’ve had some time to sit on it and think. Ultimately I do see where you were going with this, and although it doesn’t at all captivate the potential from your source material, it still does a great job at showcasing your originality and brazen risk-taking as a designer. The headpiece has got to go, and I don’t care for the feather cowl from behind because it’s been done so often. However your colours are gorgeous, and I love everything from the waist down. I’ll always appreciate risks, however this is a task wherein risks can torpedo an outfit by making it look irrelevant to the task… and you somewhat did that.

I think this was one of the easier materials to work with this week and I'm happy to share that I think this is one of my favourite submissions from you so far in this long term - then again, I know I'm a sucker for black and gold designs, so perhaps I'm skewed by that.
This outfit screams Lady Gaga in Telephone to me, especially with your use of bow and face makeup, but I appreciate that you went beyond just using elements that crossed around the body. The choice to shred the tape and craft it into a pair of oversized sleeves show you are trying to push the envelope in this task, and not just looking to play it safe, I do wonder if we could have seen a bit more of this elsewhere though.

Jared, I feel like I'm staring at a bee. Jokes, it's the caution tape vibe lol. I love this silhouette. The yellow headband definitely screams caution tape. It's the fabric choice that makes it look that way. I love that little eye makeup for detail. Much like Necole's pose, this is great. I enjoy the black headpiece merging across down the neck along with the yellow and black lines across the chest to the bottom. The shoes are nice, I just wish the lines were yellow as well. Also, the huge sleeves on the sides give me carpet instead of shredded caution tape. I do see where you where going though but that area didn't land much. Overall, this look is decent.

Although your approach to the task is obvious, I find myself in love with your torso’s lines and textures. Such a smart use of the belt straps, and the purse’s strap adds a much needed element of chaos. Your head items are great too. I for one, however, find the bottom half to be really boring and not a good representation of what this material could have achieved. The geometric pants add nothing to the outfit, it just looks like you unsuccessfully tried to duplicate the magic from the top half. Undies or a bikini bottom would have served you better. These odd material tasks are hotbeds for creativity, but this is NOT you at your most creative. It’s a rather standard silhouette, sadly.

The choice to present your outfit in this side pose was a smart decision to me. It showcases the elements in your outfit without overwhelming the viewer, allowing them to breathe and each have their own moment to shine.
Despite the pink and white shades, I feel as though there is something almost punk about this outfit. From the way the feathers stick out at the back, to the hoop earrings and chains on the boots, you really have a beautiful juxtaposition going on here, which reminds me of your first task.
You did not have to keep the original colour of your source image, and although you did, i'm glad you chose to balance it with the white, otherwise the design would have been far too saturated and busy. Nice work, and good use of listening to feedback this week.

Ashlyn, I had to look at this outfit for a while.. not because I'm in love, but I am still trying to figure out where the feathers are aside from being across the shoulders. I wish there were more on the outfit because that's what the task entailed. Use the material you chose to come up with a look but you can barely see it. While I do appreciate the color combination and the contrast of this entire look, I feel like the material aspect of it is lacking. I will say that the color combination is nice but I wanted more from this look. I gave you a low score this week because you've designed amazing looks before, but this one I wasn't as impressed with than your other looks from other seasons. It missed the mark for me in this particular task.

I really have to plug my nose at this colour palette to admire the technical craftsmanship of this outfit. The fur vest, base norm scarf, earrings, headband, and sword have allowed you to create a very captivating upper neck cluster of detail that I cannot take my eyes off of. The heels & ballet tutu - although not my first choice - really play well with the pink and white you chose to maintain from your material’s default photo (despite there being no rule you had to maintain said colours). For me, this is one of your stronger looks in this competition. You seem to be in your element when “cute” is a key theme. My advice is to play to that strength whilst challenging yourself and what you know, because you need to be reinventing yourself to stand out in competitions as fierce as this one. Good luck.

I'm not going to lie. I wasn't sure where to even start with this. Yes, I can see stones in your look, but on the whole, this design really fails to inspire me.
I will say, I appreciate the top. I like that the necklace links in with the sleeves. That element is a very clever way of using your materials, but as an outfit itself, it looks more like you threaded stones on some string and threw the necklace over your bikini, and the stone collar doesn't do enough to morph this into something I can love. Perhaps a different choice of pants, and some additional colour choices would have helped improve this look for me.

Joel, I love the use of the necklace and side shoulders/gloves effect. It really does look like stones and that's what this particular task is all about.. to use your material in such a way that it's very noticeable without you mentioning where it is. The side-swoop hair give this look an edgy vibe and I'm into it. My favorite parts of this design is the sideburn detail with the stones because it looks connected to your outfit AND the underwear giving a rough stoned look. Stones do have that effect and I'm happy you chose this. The only thing I would change are the shoes because it looks like it belongs on a different outfit. Other than that, great look this week.

This outfit is sufficient and I love the idea of showing lots of skin to make it look like a naked body was bedazzled with tiny stones. However, I find myself really disappointed with your limited use of stone-like items & textures. As I’m typing this my mind is being flooded with different items you could have used to convey stones - more than simply a pearl necklace. I also would have loved to see different colours of stone. Habbo has an array of grays, light blues, pastel jade greens, acid stain oranges, etc. You could have made something truly magical if you wanted to. They mentioned this was a double elimination, didn’t they? I’m worried for you.

Nicole, you chose an incredibly difficult material to work with - when I put this down as an option, I had no idea what people would come up with.
Your outfit reminds me a bit of speckled eggs, with your use of tones in the scarf, and the leggings. I can almost imagine a fine powder of ground eggshells dusted on that coat to give it the slight matte tint it appears to be showcasing.
I can't tell if I think the shell headpiece is a bit too on the nose. I think the way you use the hair to hide parts of it is brilliant, however I'm not the biggest fan of it generally.

Nicole, one thing that I love so much about this look is that not only did you add that headpiece which does look like a cracked egg shell, the hair coming out of it to the side is amazing. Great attention to detail. The neck area looks like it belongs with the middle outfit and shoes. The only thing where you've lost me is the arm section. It looks bulky and gives this look less shape. It wasn't needed. The look would've been elevated if your arms were showing. The stocking-shoe combination was a good touch. I am happy with this look.

I think this outfit is flat-out astonishing, however, I only get eggshells from the headpiece which is a literal giant eggshell. With the headpiece, it is much easier to trail the eye lower and envision the rest of the outfit as one with the shell. But should an entire outfit’s concept rest on one accessory? I don’t know. Normally I love fishnets but I find myself disliking their appearance here. They just don’t sit well with the overlayering on the upper bodice for me. Despite these flaws, I can’t help but rank this as one of my favourites of the week because your attention to detail is sublime, and your approach was unlike anything I would’ve expected you to do. This is valiant work.

This design is gorgeous. It is both simple and yet stunning, capturing the essence of the sun streaming through windows. I appreciate your choice to use big slabs of colour throughout the design, rather than choosing a few shades which repeat through different areas of the outfit. It creates a really bold and dramatic look which not only showcases the harsh division of coloured glass panels, but also creates something fashion forward.

Harry, that mask is gorgeous. It gives me Shea Coulee's club kid vibes. The designing on that mask is definitely a stained glass effect. The tiara on top was the icing on the cake. The shininess of the outfit was smart. I did mention that from the neck down, the colors are giving me Spider-Man vibes with that cape. However, the look and pose is so good.. I am able to look passed it. One thing I wish you did was incorporate yellow somewhere to give a pop of color but overall amazing work.

You convey stained glass brilliantly with these edgy box cut textures; it’s unlike anything I’ve seen before and I’ve done the stained glass task 2 or 3 times myself, as well as other hosts. Using only two colours is some unthinkable Homer Simpson type accidental idiot genius, it’s beautiful despite my best knowledge that it should not work. My main issue with this outfit is the mask. Personally I’m not a fan of accessories that completely cover the face because they dehumanise the Habbo and make me think I’m looking at a badge or some random pixel art. If you’re gonna use a mask, you really have to run with it and make it a reoccurring aesthetic. I love the kiss of green on the earrings though. I really like this outfit, very interesting execution.

This look is brooding and moody and totally edgy. You have chosen some really clever items to bring the zipper element into your design and I love what the end result has produced. Everything here has come into place perfectly. Well done.

Anne, this is by far my favorite outfit of the week. It's giving edgy streetwear and that's what I enjoy most when looking at this piece of art. Everything on this outfit is amazing from the lining of the hoodie, to the lining on the sleeves, to the zippers on the chest and skirt. The leather effect on the vest is incredible. My favorite part of this look are the shoes. It looks like shiny leather boots. This look is so good that even if you walked barefoot on stage, this look would have ate up the runway. Amazing work!

You’ve found so many new and interesting ways to convey zippers, it’s almost as if you designed this outfit pixel by pixel with no limitations. Sticking to grayscale was smart for such a rigid material because it lets you use stripes as unapologetically as one can. I love everything from your heels to your hood; the sunglasses and earrings give this outfit a chic backstage runway diva attitude that I’m here for. I can see this getting sent down the runway of a Donatella show in my head right now with little imagination. This is one of my favourite uses of that belt + skirt combo, possibly of all time. You clearly understand textures, how to pair them, and how to make a stunning outfit from seemingly nothing. Amazing work.

The attention to detail here is gorgeous. I love what you have given us. The shades of blue really showcase the layers of cellophane for me, with highlights on the trims to bring in a point of difference. When i first saw the winged crown, I was a little unsure, but the more I look at it, the more I see it as pieces of cellophane scrunched up into fan-folded headpieces.
The side pose was a smart choice as it really showcases the layers here without overwhelming the viewer.
My one critique is with your choice of belt. Because you have gloves on, the tan belt looks like fingers at first glance, and it is frankly bizarre until you look closer to realise it is in fact not your models hand.

Chan, this pose is everything along with this look. I appreciate the brown hair with this type of blue. It's a great combination. The textures of cellophane work here. When I think of cellophane, I think of shiny paper and that's what I see here. That blue is my favorite shade of blue. The cyan lining makes this outfit pop and seem more alive. The only thing I would change are the shoes or make them a different color. Also, I'd remove that headpiece because it wasn't needed with this look. Other than that, nice job.

Once again I wanna snatch off your head accessory and throw it under an oncoming train. Jokes aside, this outfit is really, really good. The idea to go mostly monochrome is not something I would’ve done - or would even recommend - but you made it work well. I love the light blue trim wherever it fits, and the use of those wings not only for a silhouette to match the flower skirt, but also to add more light blue lines, is impeccable. I’ve personally never seen brown cellophane, but the brown heels work flawlessly with the loud blue so I’m going to look past it. This outfit is exquisite and it proves last week wasn’t a fluke. I must admit, I struggle to see the use of your material in the task this week. I understand that you are drained from work, and I appreciate that you still took the time to create and submit something as you are a talented designer. Had you wanted feedback however, I would have suggested you either give me more context or work on using the elements from the assigned material more in the outfit itself. In the absence of clarification, I must make my best guess on your behalf.
I appreciate that the outfit is devoid of texture. It makes me wonder if the intention was to have it made out of plastic. The bow in particular really emulates the style of a folded plastic piece with the shadows in the folds. This perhaps is the closest I could get to guestimating your materials - perhaps it is a pair of folded fidget toys adorning your models back.
There are elements that point to the pop it idea in the toy - the sleeves, the chains on the shoes, the buns and the earrings, however I struggle to see these as literal uses of the toy itself in your outfit.
Despite the absence of your assigned material, your outfit is gorgeous. Your understanding and knowledge of colour theory is phenomenal. These colours, while faded and youthful, don't appear juvenile. The movement to showcase the swoosh of the scarf and peep of the shoe chain was also a wise choice. I could see myself wearing something like this in real life.

Marq, although I love the shape of this look, I struggle with the design. When pop-it fidget toys come to mind, I think of a rainbow looking toy. Sorry to say, I'm not getting that here. Instead, I'm getting cotton candy or the candy nerds. It's the colors for me and the overall design. I wish you had included colors of the rainbow and added circle shapes in the outfit. I do see the earrings as circles but it doesn't mesh well with the overall look. I will say I do love the design don't get me wrong, but it was for a different task. I know that this wasn't the material you wanted initially because it was given to you by default which goes to show how important it is to grab a material you love quickly.

You have some inquisitive methods of conveying circles that are worth praising: earrings, maid shoulder ruffles, and kimono bow to name a few. I also enjoy the entire colour palette being analogous, it showcases skill in a profound way. I understand why the large scarf was necessary for the symmetry of the design, but at this point in LT history, I’m just so sick of seeing it from behind, especially with that kimono bow belt. Your hair didn’t need to be purple either. Overall, not the most original outfit, but the technical merit is there. I hope your schedule frees up and allows you to unlock your full potential as a competitor.

I love the details of this outfit. The side pose works well to hide some of the clothing areas that would not suit your unconventional material narrative. The brown elastic bands making its way down the top is great. The darker red makes a great contrast for this lighter brown as well, so good decision here. I wonder however if you could have spiced up the look with an alternate choice in the pants.
I don't necessarily have anything against this look, however compared to some of the other outfits presented here this week, it fades into the background. I want to see you push yourself in further weeks and show us some magic.

Chris, I will say that side poses are the hardest to showcase a look. However, you did not disappoint. You can clearly see the rubber bands around your body. The point of this task was to use your material in such a way that it's obvious for viewers to know what it is without you saying it. The elastic fabric from the ears going down strapped around your arm and waist is stunning. The skirt was a nice touch to this look. The hair was right because it doesn't cover up your design. Those shoes are great because I can see rubber bands going around it. I love that you added a darker red with the rubber bands so it didn't feel or look plain. Overall this look is beautiful.

I really love the raw realness of the rubber bands in this outfit. You stayed loyal to your material from beginning to end, possibly more than anyone else. The addition of red adds so much depth and layering to this outfit. These are techniques PR players take years to learn and implement, and yet you have a firm grasp seemingly out of the gate. Jealous. Praise aside, this outfit has a big flaw for me: The layout is very unoriginal. It has been used time and time again in both long-terms and short. That may not be your fault due to your lack of exposure to PRs outside this game, however, it would also be unfair if I gave you a free pass just because you’re new. I gotta punish you, but please keep your head up because you’re on a roll.

I'm struggling with this look.
I can see elements where you have taken the bone to incorporate it into your look: the skirt is my favourite part here, with what could almost be rib bones sewn together to create that strong, unforgiving slant. The shirt in my mind uses bones in the structure of the piece (similar to a corset, but with a pattern drawn from the bones instead). I don't mind these parts of the look, but when it comes to the white hair pieces (or bone?), necklace and collar, I feel disconnected from the design. For me, I struggle to see the elegance of fashion under these elements and instead it just feels a little gimicky. I know you have incredible talent, so it's a shame to see you fall flat this week.

Rachel, this look is amazing from head to toe. The other judges may not love it, but I do. Initially, you had shown me long hair but I'm glad you took direction and changed it to short hair because it doesn't swallow up the look. My favorite part of this look is the bone going around your head to your hip. People see it as hair, I see it as art. The swerves of it make it look unique. The different textures of different bones on this entire outfit blew me away. I also love the details especially on the neck and chest areas. Even those shoes look like you're walking on bones with heels. And the different colors give it a combination of old and fresh bones. People would wear this because it looks cool. This looks like a fossil project at a museum. I love this look, beautifully done.

Oh Azli, this task was a free pass to design something extravagant, but you played it way too safe for my liking. You were on the right track, you picked a great top, cool sandals, and used more than one shade. However you did virtually nothing with those ingredients. This outfit has no pizazz, and it’s only 1 accessory away from being pedestrian wear. This task is about replicating familiar patterns which is similar to the task on Week 1, which you won. I have always been - and still am - a massive fan of you. Has the competition taken its toll on your creative freedom? Because this outfit looks like you’re burnt out.

TASK Five VERDICT
Another great week that I'm flattered to be part of! I'm terribly sorry to the two of you whom my scores helped eliminate. These killed me to write because you are all evidently so passionate and talented. Sadly the game must go on till there's only 1 of you remaining. Congrats to the 9 of you who survived! I look forward to seeing who is kickin' around in the finals. Good luck! - Snawl

I always struggle with asymmetric design tasks - which is just an 'academic' way of classifying a task where each player in theory has the same task, but with slightly different approaches required. On the one hand, having the choice of material makes it more fair as you assign the difficulty to yourself (not to say that the 'easy' options are necessarily the ones to have you stand out), however the flip side is that there are some items that are more clearly harder to even start than others. I applaud you all for your various approaches and interpretations of your materials this week. Regardless of whether or not it came across effectively to us as judges, the skill it takes to execute tasks like this is recognised, and you all have worked your butts off to be here this week! This game has been high stakes from the beginning, so while some of you will be leaving us this week, this is not to say you are not brilliant Project Runway designers. - Elysse

Congratulations to dead-roses for being the winner of this weeks task! Anne, your look not only used the unconventional material in a new and innovative way, but also created something we could all see being worn. Well done on working within the constraints you had.

Eliminations
Unfortunately it is time to say goodbye to necole1101: and EagerGamin. :( You are both such brilliant creatives and we look forward to seeing what you have to offer in the future. While this long term may not have been your competition to win, I'm sure we will see you both back very soon in the future to show us your creative flair and make as sad over what we missed out on!

While we are sad to see you two go so soon, we hope that you continue to work on your outfits and grow, even through this competition. While you are no longer eligible for the grand prize, you can continue to submit outfits based on the theme after elimination to compete for the Most Improved Designer prize of 100c. We hope to see you in future short term games inside Habbo, and would happily welcome you back to a future season of Fresh Faces.
