Black Light

At raves and clubs, clothing can take on a life of its own as it transforms up under the UV lights around the space.

For this task, designers were asked to create an outfit which will then be given a 'black light' treatment to alter the design and bring it to life.

Elysse

This is very street wear and casual, but I love how you have created a really interesting shirt illusion using the black light and flamingo ring. instead of seeing a pool toy, you get this flowing dress shirt with a gorgeous
V-Neck and I think this is really innovative, so well done! The choice to invert the flames to give it an edge and blends so well from the shoes, great choices here!

I don't hate the jacket, but I do think it kinda takes away from the youthfulness of the look a little bit.

Necole, I am a bit disappointed this week. There is too much going on. What I find positive about this is that the two-tone hair was a great idea. The earrings were cool and the white eyes are spooky which is cool as well. The details on the pants and jacket are nice to look at. However, the whole look is losing shape. It's mainly because of the unnecessary belt that goes around your waist. I assume it's the inflatable flamingo? Anyway, I wish it wasn't there because it wasn't needed since you have so many designs already present. Also, the scarf looks like it swallows you because the look is heavy. I appreciate you trying to cover the flamingo's face, I just wish you added a different neckpiece. I would have chosen a different pair of shoes with this look, something more plain because there's a lot already going on. I know you can do better.

This design is gorgeous. There is a great play here with light and shade which brings certain elements to the forefront of the piece when you are looking at it. What I see here is a gown with many complexities, from buttons along the front, to fringe on the arms and even an oversized collar and I am amazed at how your colour choices have transformed these pieces into something new.  This design is vaporwave at its finest.

Jared, this look caught my attention, in a good way. You understood the assignment. Giving us this hair was so rave-like. I love the colors and details of this look. It's so amazing to see how designers can come up with different designs that work together and you did not disappoint. You were smart to do a back outfit because that's one of my favorite poses. My favorite part of this outfit is in fact the collar. It's so unique in the black-light. The only thing I would've changed were the shoes. Other than that, amazing work this week.

The first thing I think of when I see this look is the patterning on a heat map. I love using those pride wings to create some dramatic sleeves, and using this task to elevate what is usually a colour-restricted item is a smart move. The way that you bring that head patterning down the body as it goes is also brilliant. My one critique is that I'm not sure the scarf was needed as well. Looking at your tasks in previous weeks, I feel as though you have a tendency to over design and put as much into the look as possible, but when it comes to a week where we are already working outside of our usual limitations, I believe a little less would work better.

Ashlyn, I love this outfit. The patterns are what catches my eye. It's very detailed. I love the wing effect because it adds flare and creativity to this overall look. The hair was a great choice because it's not as heavy as the outfit so the balance is there. The scarf going down the middle was a smart move. I can't stop looking at this outfit because it's so amazing. My favorite part about this look is the shape. This is what I would see at a black-light event. Nice work.

I love the contrast of this design. There is something fresh and bright here for me, and the outfit as a whole reminds me of a sunflower. It's like you have looked at the rave culture of black light and gone for a vintage/retro approach with a modernised woodstock design.I wonder if there is a little too much green across the outfit as a whole - would an orange shoe have helped tie the look together a bit more? But overall, I appreciate this unique interpretation of the task.

Joel, I love the black-light effect with this hair. It shows the lines. The use of the digital shoulder-pads was a smart idea because it wasn't used this week by any other designer. I love the details of this outfit from the dots on the vest to the digitized shoulder-pads to the see-through skirt. My only issue with this outfit as a whole is that there is too much green. If you added some  orange to other areas or another color like blue, yellow, red, or purple.. the look would've been better. You get the idea. Even though there are details that I can appreciate when looking at this, the green color distracts it all for me. Overall, this is not the best look but not the worst either. I know you can do better.

The checkers on the pants and the jacket, with contrasting colours really stand out to me in this look - they instantly draw me in. I do however find that the hairstyle distracting. It reminds me of Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray and once I saw this, I couldn't unsee it. Perhaps it is the colour inversion which draws the attention here or the bow which I don't feel adds to the outfit as a whole.

I struggle to see how you used the colour inversion challenge to its best potential. The outfit in and of itself is fine, but this could have worked just as effectively, if not more effectively, without the black light.

Nicole, I love that this outfit is different from the rest because when looking at it, I see a ghost. It was smart to have this effect in the black-light. I can appreciate that the bow on the head is the same color as the hair because if it wasn't, there would be too much going on. I love the jacket design and colors. It's giving me colorful lace vibes. I also love the checkered pants. However, you could have done without the waist part as it overlaps the pants. I wish the shirt underneath was tucked in the pants. It would've brought this more to life. The shoes are ok but I will say that the purse was a nice touch to this look.

There are a lot of things here that are just quintessential Harry - the single sleeve, the subtle layering, and many bold colours. They are what speaks to you as a designer and often shine through your work. I appreciate that you are one of the few designers who chose to embrace the freedom for an unnatural skin tone this week, however I struggle to see past the brown of this shirt you chose. Amongst beautifully neon patchwork pieces which echo an op-shoppers dream, the brown just kinda drags the whole look down for me. What I will say is that I love how you styled your model. The bold great afro mullet is simply genius, and the glasses alongside your patched pieces really emulate a Macklemore Thrift Shop vibe.

Harry, this look is everything I want and more. Let me start off by saying that the hair you chose was the right one alongside the earrings and shades. They all work together. I love how you played around with the colors this week. One amazing thing about this presentation is that if you look closely on the brown jacket/coat, it has an ombre effect which I find extremely tasteful. Also, the scarf and patterns from the waist down are great. Definitely one of the standouts this week. Great work.

I see streetwear, I see rave ready, I see fashion. This look is great. I love your colour combinations, and how you didn't shy away from bringing that little bit of read into the shoes. The detailing from the shirt collar and print/patern to the pants really cements this fashion style. The choice to accessorise with only a two-tone eyeshadow was also really smar. Your model looks like she is ready to face whatever chaos comes at any event while still being comfortable and fashion forward. Love it.

Anne, I appreciate what you have done here but I also wish you have added less to this look. I will start from the hair to the shoes. I wish the hair was different but I do like the outline of it which was cool. The attention to detail on the eyeshadow was brilliant. I love how it matches the outfit colors. To include that necklace was smart because it looks like diamonds in the black-light. I love the chest area. I will say that it is amazing to look at. Although I love the pants, I just wish it was the same colors as the top so it looks like you're walking with a digitized dress. I love the orange on the shoes because it stands out from the other colors. However, I just can't look pass the feathers on the sides. It distracts me from looking at the whole outfit because that's what I look at first.

There is a rough elegance in this outfit which I wasn't expecting to se this week. I love the way you have transformed a skirt which I have seen used often in PR/CC games into something which looks fresh and new. The ombre purple tones also set up for a dramatic outfit which is topped with that red scoop neck and bold sleeve choice. The vampire face is always a risk to showcase on a model, but because of the black light effect, it gives your model some striking blue eyes and was a great way to incorporate that element this week.

CHAN! This is the NOT the Chan I was expecting. I thought it would take time for you grow.. but at this pace, you've definitely exceeded my expectations this week. You blew me away. The shape is right, the hair choice is right, basically the whole silhouette is on point. The detailing, patterns, and colors of this outfit are so intriguing and I want to see more of what you can offer moving forward throughout this competition. I have nothing negative to say. This is perfection from head to toe. If you can provide this level of designing, others better watch out.. because here comes Chan!

This look is STUNNING. It is both vintage and modern, and intricate while still keeping a simple, down to earth sense about the outfit. When I first saw this, I immediately thought of the Love My Do collection which dropped just this week from my go-to online clothing store, so to say it's in line with the current trends in fashion is accurate. Your soft pastel colours surprised me as it is a route no one else took as effectively as you this week. Great work.

Marq, I love the pose. However, I have mixed feelings about this look as a whole. I will start by saying that the pose is giving attitude with the hand on hip which I admire. I do appreciate the glasses as well. I just wish you chose a different hair because I don't feel it goes well together as much as some other hair choices. I do see a vintage modern take on this look and I love the colors. They say that less is more but this week, I wanted more details to show through the black-light. It looks more plain. My advice to you is to pay close attention to detail before submitting.  One of the unintended consequences of the black light treatment is that you lose some of the detailing. What that means for you is what would have been a very obvious bow addition has come across looking a little like four boobs. On the bright side, the  whole look itself is not a bad look... it's good, but it can be better.

I'm not quite sure how to define this outfit, but it definitely leaves me looking at it longer as a result of being unable to pinpoint the particular style. I love the way the necklace blends into the muay thai gloves, and the shine of the belt has a nice essence to it. I'm glad you toned back the pink from your original draft, as this looks a lot more balanced and allows the blue to stand out as the predominant colour profile rather than being swallowed. I struggle to see the bow as an integral addition to the outfit - but I tend to find that it is difficult to make that accessory work without it coming across as too much.

Chris, I am happy you took direction and changed the colors a bit. Adding the blue with the purple was the icing on the cake for me. Had you stuck with all pink, the look would've been less impactful. Usually I wouldn't recommend that bow but it fit this task and it's wonderful to look at. The bow matches the outfit and I find that genius when you think outside of the box. The top was the best piece you could've chosen to balance the headpiece. It's my favorite part of this outfit. The shoes great as well. I love the pink lining on the shoes. My favorite part of this outfit is that your model looks holographic. The only thing I would change is the leg area and also remove the belt. Overall, I'm happy with this look.

I can only assume this is some sort of an art piece meant for a burning man festival, because lobby, you look like a palm tree. I think the inversion has done your corset many favours, really highlighting the construction in this piece in the bet way possible. The back wings add some flair, but could have been blended into the design in a better way - perhaps the fringe belt? Likewise, the pants are ok, but they don't really bring this outfit home for me. Ultimately, I feel like you could have benefited from using more than one colour to avoid the association with foliage, ironically, the non-inverted pink design without the headwings would have been quite a strong outfit. Ultimately I feel as though the black light treatment did not do you a favour on this outfit.

Elobstabeth, what happened? You told me that you had two outfits and you wanted feedback on the other one and wanted to submit it. But instead, you chose this one. I will say that it was not a smart move. The other look was better in the sense that it was not costumey. This one on the other hand, looks just that. It looks like an outfit you would wear to a festival. I do appreciate the direction you were heading, it just was for a different task. My issues are that the pants have no correlation with the rest of the outfit. It looks like it belongs on a different outfit. Also, the headpiece and wings were not needed. The look is all one color as well. Although I do love the pants and detailing chest area because it looks like a green diamond, I can't stop looking at the wings and headpiece. It just did not belong. I hope you understand this critique. You were doing great throughout the competition, let's just hope that if you make it this week, impress us again like before.

If there was ever a vapourwave rave, this would be it. Some of these colours are really bright and bold, but you've balanced everything out really well so that no colour overwhelms. I particularly love the way the purple tubing goes down from the ponytails, into the straps and then finally finishes at the skirt. Your use of dark blues to balance the cyans also helps create depth in this piece, which is something that can be difficult to execute well in this challenge.

Rachel, this outfit is so beautiful to look at. I expected someone to deliver this hair and you did. The colors of it gives me neon realness. The purple and black streak of hair was a great touch from the neck up. The shades were also a great addition to it as well. I'm glad you decided to change the mid-section because this gives so much detail compared to the other one. The vertical dots and the purple lining in the chest area was genius. It was just the right amount of detailing. The detailing of the skirt looks like purple fire which is cool and the shoes match the whole look which is a plus. I want to party with this girl at a rave and if anyone can make an outfit as good as this one, I'd say join the party! Overall, this is definitely one of my favorites.

TASK Four VERDICT

It's amazing how something as simple as inverting the colour pallet on a design can completely re-imagine a staple piece of clothing into something new. Yes, this week was a little conceptual, but I am amazed at the quality of outfits to come out of this weeks task. Everyone brought something different to the table which gave us a broad range of elements to be wowed by. - Peeta & Elysse

Winner

Congratulations to Chan for serving up something fierce and full of originality which incorporated the black light task spectacularly. These more conceptual tasks can be difficult to work with, but you have clearly been paying attention to the feedback you have received over the weeks and it has paid off!

As a reward for coming first this week, you will be able to have first choice of material for the next task.

Elimination

Lobby, we have seen so much growth from you in these short four weeks and we are sad to see you go. Unfortunately, the look this week looked like it belonged to another competition - perhaps it would have been better suited for the RPDR or CC stage, and ultimately, this costume-ey design is your downfall. We cannot wait to see how you continue to grow as a designer and look forward to seeing you exceed beyond our expectations!

While you are no longer eligible for the grand prize, you can continue to submit outfits based on the theme after elimination to compete for the Most Improved Designer prize of 100c.

We hope to see you in future short term games inside Habbo, and would happily welcome you back to a future season of Fresh Faces.
