Layered Gowns

Gowns are a staple in Project Runway. They can help elevate a look to that next level, bringing in elegance and sophistication.

For this task, designers were asked to create a gown using layers. The key to this task was to work with different materials to achieve that multi-layered effect.

Elysse

I really like the way you have played with the silhouette of this piece to create layers, rather than just relying on different fabric materials. As a result, you've created something which has dimension which can be really tricky to do within the constraints of Habbo clothing.

I love a little goth moment, so these colours are very pleasing to me, and I think the touches of gold in the accessories lift the colours perfectly. The ombre effect you have between the gold and darker red is also stunning. Well done.

Necole, let me start off by saying that I love the hair especially the bangs going down your face on both sides. It gives me Dua Lipa vibes and I'm here for it. The makeup with the hair is fine. The gold accents around your neck are visually appealing. I love the texture of the mid-section layer but it's hard for me to see it. I have to look up close because the outfit is dark so besides the flames, the outfit looks plain from afar. Overall, the look itself is great but not excellent. I just wish you removed the flamed vest and incorporated a different garment piece to elevate the look. Other than that, good job.

My brother is getting married later this year, and as a result, I have spent the last few months browsing formal dresses to wear. This style is something that I can see fitting into the current styles on offer today, making it practical and wearable - something which often comes across in your designs.

That said, the use of the 'santa' dress is always an interesting one to work with. You are not only limited by one colour, but two. Given then monochrome approach you took for this task, I wonder if there was a better angle to hide some of that white from the top and keep the focus more on the red.

Jared, I enjoy this piece. I rarely use that pose when I participate in games and let me start off by saying that it works here. This looks like an outfit you would wear to a Christmas ball. The gown is flawless and I usually don't recommend headpieces with such heavy outfits like gowns but it's not over-exaggerated so it's wearable. The hair was a great choice and it gives fashion. The scarf was a good touch to the neck area. From the waist up, I adore looking at this outfit though I was hoping you would use a different dress/skirt but the look is fine so I'm able to overlook that section. All in all, let me finish by saying that I am happy with your progression throughout these project runway games. You are becoming more knowledgeable and can take direction well. Nice work.

Let me start by saying, I was so happy you asked for feedback this week. The moment you showed us your draft, I turned to Peeta and said "Of course she shows us something without  the need for any feedback at all". That piece was stunning. But so is this.

The way you have used muted colours to blend different layers leaves you with a dress that is full of subtle beauty. There is an ease to this outfit. It just falls perfectly, with each element bringing together the look in a different way. Great work.

Ashlyn, this outfit is gorgeous. The construction and shape of it makes it so refreshing to look at. The hair choice was really great because it's not too over-the-top with a heavy gown and it's the perfect size. I love the shoulder pads and the sleeves. I haven't seen it before and I love seeing things new to me. The scarf on the side going to the bottom of the gown is creative. The colors work here and the overall presentation is nice. However, there are so many details and textures which isn't bad but it just needed a bit less. The tiger-face shape in the middle and the belt wasn't needed. Other than that, this look is beautiful.

I love the blending of colours in this. The brighter pink tones are balanced so nicely with the purple tones and I just love it. The subtle splash of pink in the hair as well makes me think your model is standing under a cute muted spotlight on the runway, and I think this is a clever touch as well.

In terms of the outfit itself, the layers are amazing, but there is a lot of fabric. This is very true to your style, and in order to achieve the layers you have created it makes it difficult to take one part away. Perhaps trying to illusion a necklace as a plunging neckline would have created a lighter feeling garment.

Joel, the colors of this gown give me plum vibes and I love me some good plums. The pose is nice and the lining of the garment pieces work. I love the different shades of purple. It has a mixed ombre feel. I just wish that the shape of the overall look was more appealing. Instead of striking shapes to make a unique gown, it looks like I'm staring at a cylinder. But, based off some of the looks this week, this has more layering so I am willing to overlook the shape. Although I do appreciate the ombre hair because it was creative, I don't think that was the right hair choice. Also, the necklace wasn't needed. It covers the jacket. If the jacket was opened, then the necklace would've been more useful. This presentation is great but not the best. I know you can do better, just really focus on every area of your look.

Your original draft was a great piece of gothic wear, but it was sitting somewhat adjacent to the task. This look however, nails it. You have such a beautiful way of conveying the draped fabrics as they weave in and out of the layers of the dress. The styling of the hair also helps elevate the look, giving it a sense of formality despite the top of the dress being constructed from elements that would usually be associated with a more grunge styling.

Nicole, I said I was in love with your look last week, and I'm not ashamed to say that I am in love with your look this week as well. I love the upward trajectory you are having so keep up the good work. When you don't overthink, you create such masterpieces like this one. Everything from the hairstyle to the bottom of your gown is stunning. The one shoulder showing is beautiful because it shows creativity. The layering of the sides also look beautiful. You made the top work well with the bottom half because the white connects even though there are different textures.. it's so well made. The eyes are perfect, I would stick with those eyes because to me they are mesmerizing. I can see anyone wanting to wear this. This look is in my top 10 so far in this competition. Beautiful work.

This is a very different approach to what I was expecting to see for this weeks task, but I like it. It's got a simplicity to it that makes it work.

I think the hat was a really smart decision for this outfit. The pastel pink and bow could make this seem like a somewhat juvenile design, but using it as an accessory alongside the bold red peepholes help move the outfit away from that impression. The subtle mix of playful and edgy makes me think this would work on a modern day recreation of Sleeping Beauty, because it takes the bet parts of those gowns and gives it a more modern, grunge twist.

Elise, I love the hat with this look. It gave an extra "humph" that the look needed. I say this because the layering of the gown was just ok. I wanted more. I do appreciate the middle section and it gives more design to the overall gown. If the gown was all plain with no detail, it wouldn't have been great. The colors are so great because one doesn't overpower the other. However, when I look at this presentation, my main focus is from the waist up. I wish you would've added more to the bottom as well perhaps more layering? Overall, the look is nice. Well done.

This is honestly breathtaking. I am amazed and intrigued because I'm not even certain of how you put this whole look together.

I really like how you have gone for a vertical layering approach here, which helps you stand out from your competitors, and really allows the full range of the colour palette to shine. I also love the incorporation of the hijab into the dress, as it moves away from a traditionally western style gown, while still being equally as elegant.

I think the one thing that stands out in this look, and not in a positive way is the head piece. If it was an orange or white to match the other tones in your dress, it might have been easier to accept, but as it stands in it's red form, it really wasn't needed as a part of the look.

Harry!.. I love this look! It's it's.. something I haven't seen ever before. This look made my English different and I am stuttering. Everything is great to look at except two things. One, I don't think the headpiece was needed with this amazing outfit. Maybe it's the color? If it was black or orange.. the outfit would've been better. Or none at all? You get my point. The red threw me off. Two, you know I am going to clock you for the blue skin. even though it looks cool and matches the background, you're a designer.. not an avatar from the movie. I would have appreciated a regular skin tone even more. Other than that, amazing look this week!

The way I see the layers of this dress is as though they are peeling out from the chest area, showcasing more as you go outwards, rather than a vertical draping of fabrics. For me, this is innovative and I appreciate it. The green and brown compliment each other well, but I feel like your hair could have been a different tone of brown to differentiate it somewhat more with the brown incorporated into the dress.

Lisa, I semi-enjoy this gown. The colors of the gown work well together. The pose is very nice. I love that jacket with the arms out. It's one of my favorite jackets. I do wish that the jacket was the same color as the gown though. Now let me chizzle down with some negatives. Since there is so much going on with the gown, that hairstyle was not needed. I would've preferred you wear a shorter hair or no hair at all just to create a balance from the head to the neck and down. It looks like you just slapped on the scarf and belt. It hides the actual design underneath. I would've loved to see the shape of the overall gown without those two pieces unless those two pieces were the same color as the gown.. then that's a different story. Keep pushing, you got this. I will end this critique by saying I do appreciate you covering up and listening to my critique from last week.

I love the detailing on this outfit! The more I look at it, the more I am amazed at the layers this design has. Everything is so intricately interwoven, and nothing seems out of place which can be difficult when working with so many different elements. I think you really nailed the layers of this dress across the whole outfit, and your simple accessories compliment the design really well. I especially love the butterfly clips with the hairstyle you chose.

Anne, this look is beautiful. It's very well constructed and the detailing is so creative. The neckpiece being the same fabric material as the gown makes it look like its popping out of the collar. That's so unique and different. I appreciate the creativity. The hair works well too because it's behind the outfit. it doesn't cover up anything. I love the bangs of the hair and the overall color. There is a contrast which I love. The lines formed in this gown make it so refreshing to view. The belt synching the waist was smart. The layering is flawless. My only critique is that the headpieces weren't needed. It looks like you are a queen from Star Trek. Other than that, I am very happy with this look. Amazing work this week.

There is a lot of different textures happening in this outfit, and some blend well, while others don't. It's a bit of a chaotic mixture in a sense between the fur, the satin, the chains and the buttons. I wonder if there is too much happening.
In terms of layers, this outfit is also a little disappointing for me, because these elements you have chosen don't quite create a layered illusion as well as I know you can.
The red and black is a nice colour choice, but overall, I find that the outfit doesn't blow me away.

Chan, I love the colors of this outfit. Red is a color of passion and this outfit shows a lot of it. The slick-back hair is a smart move for a gown like this. I love the detailing in the middle and I am happy with the neck design because it's something I haven't seen before. Also, having no earrings made the look stronger. While I do appreciate the look itself, I just wish there were more layering. You could have replaced the furry top and created another layer with the bottom half of this gown because it needed that to elevate this look further. Overall, this look was more nice than ok.

The textures on this dress are what makes this outfit stand out and bring the extra layers in the design to light.

Marq, I am very thrilled you submitted this. Even without me giving you feedback to add the gold earrings and the red neckpiece, the outfit was amazing. The gold accessory pops. It's like BOOM. I feel like I want to shoot some basketballs in those earrings. The hair is right and the bangs are what gets me. Those bangs are really nice to look at and so is the gown. It's very well constructed and the woosh area in the front going to the side is really nice. I am very happy with this. You ate and left no crumbs.

There is something about this look that has caught me off guard, but in a good way. The colour choice is usually the opposite of what I would go for, but here it really works together well. I love the way the sleeves have turned out on this dress, it adds some interesting dimension to the design, and despite being the only person to attempt a short dress, you really have nailed the layering aspect without getting too caught up in complexities.

I'm not sure the purple ear things were necessary, but the overall look is stunning. Well done.

Chris, I am very happy you have decided to tweek the things I had told you in the very short amount of time. Putting the whole look aside, that shows tremendous dedication and commitment to this long-term and I value that wholeheartedly. This hairstyle is an elevation from the previous one. I don't see it often and I'm glad you did it. The ear accessory works because there isn't much going on but it's well executed. My favorite part of this look are the arms going into the opened sleeves. Very unique and again I haven't seen that before so kudos to you for creating something new. The "V" cut in the middle is nice. I'm glad you changed the bottom half. Gowns can be interpreted many different ways so I'm also glad you took a different approach. The shoes are fine because it shows some skin. Great work.

I've been told that the feathered cowl and slanted HC belt have been used to death in Project Runway, but I come into this world with a lot less experience compared to some of the other hosts. What that means is that something which might not be original to someone else can be really unique in my eyes, and I love the way you have utilised these staples in your outfit. The combination of the slanted belt with the asymmetrical hem of your lighter purple layer has a really nice unity, before trailing off into the elegance of your skirt. You were not the only person to utilise this skirt this week, but you were the only one to showcase it from this angle which is a real strength for this element of clothing. The choice of purple tones in this outfit are also placed in such a way that it showcases your models curves in all the right ways. Brilliant work this week.

I don't know whether to call you Elobstabeth because that's what I see or Elizabeth but either way.. this look is stunning. The shade of purple is really nice. The hair choice and color is right because it goes to the side which doesn't cover the outfit. Also, the contrast between the hair color and the gown is striking. The feathered cowl looks even better when it has a darker feel to it because it rarely looks like feathers. The textures are nice and the wrinkle behind it makes this gown show variety. It shows a minor layer above the huge layer but it's better than having only one layer. The belt was a nice add-on to the outfit because it looks like it connects with the cowl-piece and goes along the side which was creative. Keep up the good work. Very proud of you.

This outfit is quite understated, perhaps because of your choice of colours. You have layers, but the colour of the jacket makes it feel almost disconnected, and a little dated which is in direct opposition to the way you have styled your model. I really like the hidden white element under the jacket, and think this could have been used more effectively to create a more dramatic set of layering on the dress.

I worry that since your win in week one, you are beginning to doubt yourself. Hold onto the confidence you showcased then and keep working and trusting your gut. You have the potential to win if you focus on the design tasks given.

Rachel, I will say when I look at this outfit, it doesn't strike me as much as your first outfit both being around the same color. It's not really the construction of the outfit, it's just the color combination. I've seen it before from you in week 1 but also with dead-roses this week. The only difference between yours and hers is that she hasn't used that color yet whereas you have. I just wanted variety. Be more versatile. I know it's just week 3 but show me more. Also, you could've done without the jacket especially the color mixed with that gown. On the bright side, the construction of this outfit is amazing. The layering is there and what I do love about this is that the layers are both different. I love the middle chest design. I just wish I could have seen it more without the jacket in the way. If you put a cape behind that middle layer, it would elevate this look further. I will say the neck-tie, earrings, and hair is nice to look at. Even though I said what I said in the beginning, I'm willing to slightly look passed it because this look is polished. Keep up the good work.

TASK Three VERDICT

The level of skill shown in this task was overwhelming. Each and every one of you brought something great to the table and we are so excited to see how each of you progresses further as the competition plays out. For you designers that have made it to next week, don't get too comfortable... There are more double eliminations ahead . - Peeta & Elysse

Winner

Our first perfect score of the season stood out because the design nailed the brief, showed originality and was something we could see walking down a runway and on a night out. Congratulations to nicrobbo95 for your brilliant gown you created this week. We will be awarding you a 50c prize as per our Exceptional Outfits prize.

Eliminations

Due to such great outfits, nonetheless a decision had to be made. Although the results were neck and neck, we have finally come to a conclusion:

Fupaqueen - Elise, we thought your looks were chic and modern, but unfortunately it fell short for us on the layers. Your skills when it comes to project runway are amazing and we hope to see you continue to join us in short term games and other upcoming long term games.

Lisaopalite - This was your first PR game ever and you should be immensely proud of what you submitted in these last three weeks. We know this was a bit out of your comfort zone, but your skills are clear. Perhaps part of your downfall is not having people to bounce ideas off and getting stuck in your own head.

While we are sad to see you two go so soon, we hope that you continue to work on your outfits and grow, even through this competition.

While you are no longer eligible for the grand prize, you can continue to submit outfits based on the theme after elimination to compete for the Most Improved Designer prize of 100c.

We hope to see you in future short term games inside Habbo, and would happily welcome you back to a future season of Fresh Faces.
